'Triage to Treatment' reflection

First-year medicine student Alexandra Jakubow reflected on a recent student-sponsored program featuring a NEOMED alumna:

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Emergency Medicine Interest Group recently came together to host an enlightening and interactive event, "Triage to Treatment: Neuro-Emergency Essentials." Held on May 15, the workshop provided attendees with a comprehensive overview of essential skills in managing neurological emergencies.

At the heart of the workshop was a captivating presentation by Dr. Negin Khosravi, an emergency medicine resident and 2023 graduate of NEOMED, who delved into the complexities of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), stroke management and Cushing's Syndrome. Through an interactive approach, Dr. Khosravi engaged attendees in hands-on learning, demonstrating the use of the NIH Scale and Glasgow Coma Scale for assessing TBI severity. Volunteers participated in practical exercises, gaining invaluable experience in neurological assessment techniques. The workshop provided a platform for medical students to enhance their skills, exchange ideas, and connect with peers discussing traumatic brain injuries.

The workshop also featured an in-depth exploration of types of hemorrhages. Dr. Khosravi expertly dissected various MRI scans of stroke patients, guiding attendees through differential diagnoses and treatment considerations.

A highlight of the event was Dr. Khosravi's discussion of her most recent experiences, offering attendees a glimpse into the real-life cases one encounters in Emergency Medicine. Her insights into the diagnosis and management added another layer of depth to the workshop, illustrating the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of neuro-emergency care.

Overall, the Triage to Treatment event was a resounding success, thanks to the expertise of Dr. Khosravi and the collaborative efforts of the AANS and the Emergency Medicine Interest Group. The event not only enriched attendees' knowledge but also underscored the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in advancing patient care in neuro-emergencies.
