Two College of Medicine students honored in commissioning ceremony

First-year medical students Prateek Asthana and Spencer Dailey were honored with a commissioning ceremony in the Purple Star Military Lounge on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026. Both are members of the United States Army.

Provost Forrest Faison read the military oath to Asthana and Dailey, as they were surrounded by family and friends, as well as NEOMED faculty and staff who wished to show their support. President John Langell, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was in attendance to share words of encouragement with both students. Dr. Faison reminded them that they are part of an elite group of only 1% of the U.S. population that serves in the military.

Following the oath, Asthana and Dailey both took a moment to acknowledge their supporters in attendance.

“I want to thank all of my family and friends; I could not do this without your support,” noted Asthana.

Dailey thanked his parents and brother, crediting them for teaching him how to be a kind and hard-working person.

“I have wanted to serve in the military since I was a child,” Dailey remarked before sharing an emotional embrace with his family members.

SFC David Chovan also expressed gratitude to the NEOMED community, stating “You can’t find a more supportive school for students serving in the military,” before personally thanking the students and their families in attendance.
