Validating a tool to measure fulfillment and burnout

Kyle Gustafson, Pharm.D., associate professor of pharmacy practice and assistant professor of graduate studies, recently published an article titled “Concurrent validity of the Professional Fulfillment Index in a sample of pharmacy residents and preceptors,” in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.

The purpose of the study was to validate the use of the Stanford Professional Fulfillment Index (PFI) with pharmacy residents and preceptors. The fulfillment and burnout survey previously has been used and validated with physician and resident physician populations. Dr. Gustafson and colleagues administered the PFI alongside of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a gold standard burnout survey, to assess fulfillment and burnout in active pharmacy residents and residency preceptors, and compared the results.

Dr. Gustafson acted as the lead author and primary investigator in the study. The article was coauthored by Brittany Bates, Pharm.D., from Ohio Northern University, and Kristine M. Cline, Pharm.D., from The Ohio State University.

“The study helps increase the available resources for pharmacy residencies to evaluate and monitor resident wellness. The PFI is an open-source, free-to-use resource that makes it more accessible and cost effective to use,” he said.
