Welcoming the newest class of Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant students
The transition from the classroom to the clinical setting is one of the most exciting milestones for any healthcare student. In the NEOMED Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) program, that transition starts early.
On January 5, NEOMED welcomed the newest cohort to the Master of Medical Science in Anesthesia (M.M.Sc.A.) program. One week later, they were already in the lab for their first intensive Airway and IV Workshop—a foundational experience designed to turn theoretical knowledge into muscle memory.
Morning: The Art of Airway Management
The morning session focused on the most critical responsibility of a CAA: maintaining a patient airway. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, students rotated through stations to learn the progressive steps of airway intervention:
- Perfecting bag mask ventilation.
- Placing laryngeal masks.
- Moving from traditional direct laryngoscopy to cutting-edge video laryngoscopy for endotracheal tube placement.
Afternoon: Precision and Confidence in Vascular Access
After a quick break, the students returned for the afternoon IV workshop. The session followed a "crawl-walk-run" approach to ensure student comfort and patient safety.
Students began by practicing needle tracking and catheter advancement on high-fidelity IV task trainers. After they practice and gain confidence, they perform an IV on one of their classmates. This peer-to-peer practice is essential for learning how to calm a patient’s nerves while maintaining clinical precision.
“The airway and IV workshops offer a transformative experience, allowing students to visualize themselves as healthcare providers—some for the first time. By connecting these hands-on simulations to their studies, students gain motivation to master the intricacies of a CAA,” says Nate Flath, CAA program director.
About the Program
These workshops are just the beginning of a rigorous, fast-paced curriculum designed to prepare students for high-stakes environments in the operating room.
The NEOMED M.M.Sc.A program is dedicated to training skilled Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants who work within the anesthesia care team to provide safe, highly technical care to surgical patients.
