On May 8, 2013, the University unveiled “Nate” the Walking Whale as its first-ever mascot. The Walking Whale is better known as Ambulocetus natans, an early cetacean that could walk as well as swim. The replica specimen displayed at NEOMED was discovered in Pakistan in 1993 by J.G. “Hans” Thewissen, Ph.D., Ingalls Brown Chair of Anatomy in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology.
