The Office of Faculty Enrichment and Engagement is pleased to offer all NEOMED faculty and staff access to the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) Spring 2024 Webinar Series “Creating a Culture of Teaching and Learning.” The series will be broadcast each Thursday from March 7 through April 4, noon – 1 p.m. ET via Zoom.
NEOMED faculty and staff may register for individual sessions or the series.
Registration provides NEOMED faculty and staff with links to the webinars, all accompanying resources, and archived session recordings once they are available. Faculty and staff are encouraged to register even if they are not available to attend the synchronous sessions.

With the recent US Supreme Court decision striking down race-conscious admissions in higher education, institutions are looking to California where the practice has been banned in public schools for nearly 3 decades. Over the past 15 years, UC Davis School of Medicine has tripled enrollment of students from historically excluded groups by developing an admissions model that prioritizes workforce needs and attention to the mission fit, lived experience, and socioeconomic background of each applicant. Dr. Henderson will discuss lessons from UC Davis to assist educational institutions seeking to uphold a commitment to health and education equity.

In this session, we will introduce a new partnership between AACOM and the University of Virginia's Motivate Lab to study medical student/physician motivation and well-being, and how it can be improved through the Resilient Mindsets in Medicine (RMIM) initiative, where medical instructors are introduced to new strategies on how to approach teaching. To appreciate the problem that our partnership is trying to solve along with possible solutions, recent AACOM National Survey Findings (from over 10,000 participants) of incoming and graduating medical students will be shared along with examples of promising new strategies that instructors are now learning in the Resilient Mindsets in Medicine initiative.

This webinar covers the concept of the hidden curriculum in health professions education, a critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of educational environments that significantly influences teaching and learning experiences. We will explore the theoretical foundations of the hidden curriculum, examining how unspoken norms, values, and beliefs shape our educational environments and impact students' identity formation. Throughout, we will consider practical strategies for educators to recognize and explore the hidden curriculum in their own teaching and practice. Ultimately, this webinar aims to equip medical educators with the insights and tools they need to navigate the hidden curriculum, enhancing the impact of their teaching, and the learning journey of trainee health professionals. The concluding Q&A offers an opportunity for attendees to engage in dialogue, share experiences, and seek advice on implementing presented strategies in their own educational contexts.
