All Ohio Excellence in Journalism Contest Honors Ignite

NEOMED’s Ignite magazine was presented first place for Best Trade Publication in Ohio at the Press Club of Cleveland’s  2021 All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest award ceremony, held virtually Thursday, June 24.

The judges noted, “The well-written stories could easily have gone over the head of the average reader, but they were interesting and easy to understand even for a reader not in the medical field. Nice photography and illustrations complete the winning package. Kudos!”

The All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest is open to print and digital newspapers, magazines, television and radio throughout the state of Ohio. This year’s contest evaluated entries from the calendar year 2020, which included the Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 issues of Ignite, Northeast Ohio Medical University’s semi-annual human interest magazine.

Ignite won in three additional categories.

Roderick L. Ingram Sr., vice president for communications and chief marketing officer, won first place in the Headline Writing Online category for “The Perfect Marquinez: Stirred, Never Shaken,” marking NEOMED’s first win in this category. Ingram also won second place in the Headline Writing All Other Publications category for “The Man You Script for the Good in Us,” about alumnus Carl Allamby, M.D. (’19).

A second-place award in the Covers: Trade and Professional Publications category went to an image of the COVID-19 virus on the cover of the Fall 2020 issue. The illustration is by Dave Szalay, a professor at the University of Akron Myers School of Art and frequent Ignite contributor.

Elaine Guregian is the editor and Scott J. Rutan is the publication designer for Ignite. Roderick L. Ingram Sr. and Jared F. Slanina are contributing editors to the NEOMED publication.
