Celebrating Faculty Excellence

Congratulations to the five NEOMED faculty members who will be recognized for their exceptional work and commitment at the Faculty and Staff Virtual Awards ceremony Friday, March 26, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Following is the list of faculty recipients, along with comments from their nominators. 

Junior Faculty Award: 

Jeffrey G. Mellott, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology

Margaret B. Sanders, M.A., LSW, assistant professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine

This award honors a faculty member at the instructor or assistant professor level within the consortium who has demonstrated exemplary performance and has made a noteworthy contribution to the NEOMED community.

“Dr. Mellott has been a dynamic member of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, the College of Medicine, and of the University since his appointment as a faculty member in 2015. Throughout his time at NEOMED, Dr. Mellott has been a highly regarded educator and a very productive and well-funded researcher who can serve as a role model for success among junior faculty.”

-Brett R. Schofield, Ph.D., professor of neurobiology; Yong Lu, Ph.D., course director, Medical Neuroscience; and Jeffrey J. Wenstrup, Ph.D., professor and chair, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology

“Ms. Sanders is an outstanding candidate for this award, given her excellence in teaching, research, and service. In all areas of her work, she distinguishes herself in her advocacy for others including students, patients, and the NEOMED community.”

Outstanding Faculty Research Award: 

Julie M. Aultman, Ph.D., professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine

Liya Yin, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Integrative Medical Sciences

This award honors a NEOMED faculty member who is an outstanding researcher in his or her field. The award focuses on nationally and internationally recognized excellence and productivity in research and the individual recognized should have contributed substantively to his or her field of research interest. The nature of the research may be basic, translational or clinically focused.

“Dr. Julie Aultman is an exemplary researcher who is highly accomplished and represents NEOMED well nationally and internationally. During the past three years Dr. Aultman has served as research director for the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) and has been instrumental in providing mentorship and primary care research opportunities and education to our NEOMED medical, pharmacy and graduate studies students.”

-John M. Boltri M.D., FAAFP, professor and chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine

“Dr. Yin joined NEOMED as a research assistant professor in the Department of Integrative Medical Sciences in 2008. Since then, she has been actively participating in teaching, service and research. She was promoted to research associate professor in 2014 and tenure-track associate professor in 2015. Over the past 11 years, she has developed herself into an excellent educator and an outstanding scientist. In addition, she has participated in a number of services at the local, national and international levels.”

Liebelt-Wheeler Award for Faculty Excellence: 

Amy F. Lee, M.D. (’88), M.P.H., M.B.A., professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine

This award honors a faculty member within the consortium who has demonstrated exemplary performance in the areas of teaching, service, professional standing, or patient care.

“I have admired Dr. Lee’s dedication and leadership of the collaborative Master of Public Health program she has now led for many years. That admiration not only encompasses her passion for public health and her organizational and administrative prowess, but also her commitment to student success in this graduate program. Her dedication to student success is extraordinary.”

Join the NEOMED community on Friday to recognize and congratulate these faculty members, along with Community Service Award recipient Janet Coon and Mary Jane Kelly Award recipient Cheri Harris, as well as staff members to be honored for their years of service.
