Current NMF Scholarships & Service-Learning Programs

Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy Memorial Scholarship Award

  • Established by NMF Alumna Yvonne S. Thornton, MD, MPH, FACOG, the Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy Memorial Scholarship is given in honor of three enslaved women who, as subjects of experimentation, helped shape advances in clinical and surgical knowledge and are recognized today as the Mothers of Gynecology.
  • This $5,000 scholarship will be given to one (1) African-American woman who is a known descendant of American slaves, and is enrolled in an accredited US medical school program for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Finalists will be interviewed by Dr. Thornton.
  • Application deadline: June 13, 2021 (11:59 pm ET).

Delores and Charles Baker Scholarship - NEW!

  • Established in 2021 by Dr. Delores Baker, this need-based Scholarship provides a $5,000 award to an underrepresented minority medical school student enrolled in an accredited program for the 2021-2022 academic year. It is preferred that applicants have an interest in health issues that impact rural populations and an interest in practicing in a rural setting.
  • Application deadline: July 11, 2021 (11:59pm ET).

Drs. Ludlow & Ruth Creary Family Foundation Scholarship

  • Established in 2020, this Scholarship will provide $2,500 to an African American or Black 1st or 2nd year undergraduate student from California and/or attending a 4-year college or university in California for the 2021-2022 academic year, and is interested in the Allied Health Professions.
  • The selected Scholar will be presented with the award at the NMF Los Angeles Champions of Health Awards in October, 2021.
  • Application deadline: June 30, 2021 (11:59 pm ET).

Dr. Herman and Shirley Gray Family Scholarship

  • Established in 2019 by NMF Alumnus Dr. Herman Gray, Jr., MD, MBA in memory of his father, Herman B. Gray, Sr., MD, this need-based award provides a $5,000 award to an African American student enrolled at the Wayne State University School of Medicine for the 2021-2022 academic year, and have a demonstrated interest in Public Health, Community Health, Population Health or Children and Families.
  • The selected Scholars will be required to attend a reception in Detroit, MI – TBD.
  • Application deadline: July 7, 2021 (11:59 pm ET).

Dr. Daniel Denis Laroche, Sr. Scholarship

  • Established in 2021 by NMF Alumnus Dr. Daniel Laroche in memory of his father, this scholarship provides $5,000 to one (1) African American, Afro-Latino, or Native American student enrolled in an accredited medical school for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Eligible candidates must show a demonstrated interest in pursuing an Anesthesiology residency, and be committed to academic excellence, research, leadership, and service.
  • The awarded Scholar is required to attend and present their research in Anesthesiology at the Scholarship virtual reception on October 6, 2021.
  • Application deadline: June 30, 2021 (11:59 pm ET).

Dr. David Kearney McDonogh Scholarship in Ophthalmology/ENT

  • The Dr. David Kearney McDonogh Scholarship in Ophthalmology/ENT is designed to increase the number of qualified physicians who are interested in a career in Ophthalmology or Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) specialties. The scholarship is a $5,000 award to at least two (2) African-American, Afro-Latino, or Native American medical students enrolled in an accredited US medical school for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Eligible candidates must be committed to academic excellence, research, leadership and service. The awarded Scholars are required to attend and present their research in Ophthalmology/ENT at the McDonogh Reception. Scholars who are selected from another US State will be expected to video conference into the event to accept the award and present his or her research.
  • Application deadline: August 1, 2021 (11:59 pm ET).

Johnson & Johnson/NMF Future Leaders Scholarship Program

  • Established in 2021, Johnson & Johnson, has partnered with NMF to develop the Future Leaders Scholarship Program, an innovative, 2-year service-learning program designed to expose high performing underrepresented minority (URM) medical (MD, MD/PhD, DO, DO/PhD) students with analytical skill sets that will prepare them to become future clinician and research leaders with a commitment to address the structural and systemic factors, which cause the health disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color. In addition, the program will expose students to various functions within the pharmaceutical, medical devices and healthcare industries where physicians play a key role.
  • This scholarship program will provide $5,000 for the first year, and $10,000 for the second year of the award to a cohort of twenty (20) 2nd year URM medical students.
  • Program Structure: The program will include a series of didactic training sessions during both program years, covering topics such as drug development, drug safety, statistics, real world evidence, scientific publications, clinical trial protocols, epidemiology, etc. For students interested in a surgical field, there will be didactic sessions focused on surgery in the second year.
  • Mentorship: Each Scholar will be paired with a physician mentor who will facilitate a professional relationship and share critical career insights with the Scholar.
  • Project: In year 2, Scholars will conduct a research project, which will be developed in conjunction with his/her mentor.
  • Onsite Opportunities: Scholars may also have an opportunity to be onsite at one of the Johnson & Johnson facilities, if public health/safety permits. While onsite, the Scholars will be able to work closely with their mentors while finalizing their projects and have one on one meetings with leaders within the organization.

NMF Cardiothoracic Surgery Scholarship

  • Established in 2020, this award will provide $5,000 to an underrepresented minority student enrolled in an accredited medical program for the 2021-2022 academic year.
  • Applicants must demonstrate clinical interest in cardiothoracic surgery, as well as evidence of community service and leadership potential at an early stage in their professional careers.

    NMF Fitzbutler-Jones Alumni Society of the University of Michigan Scholarship Fund
  • Established in 2019, this need-based $5,000 Scholarship will be awarded to a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year African American student who is enrolled at the University of Michigan Medical School for the 2021-2022 academic year, and who has demonstrated excellence in academics and financial need.
  • Application deadline: July 7, 2021 (11:59 pm ET).

NMF National Alumni Council Scholarship

  • Established to help address the severe national shortage of physician-leaders who are committed to the health of underserved communities, this award will provide a $5,000 scholarship to twelve (12) fourth-year medical students for the 2021-2022 academic year from underrepresented minority groups who have demonstrated evidence of community service and leadership potential at an early stage in their professional careers.
