For anyone who has seen SafeSpace decals around campus and wondered what they represented, a recent presentation organized by Andre Burton, J.D., executive director of diversity, equity and inclusion, offered answers. On Wednesday, Sept. 21, guest speaker Bruce Menapace, Ph.D., a psychologist at Cleveland State University, presented a session on understanding and guiding or advising gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Many faculty or staff members in the well-attended event stayed to participate in small-group sessions at which they discussed ways to handle a variety of potential questions and scenarios on campus.
A SafeSpace decal marks locations where people have been trained to provide an inclusive, non-judgmental environment.
