Loyal Retirees Meet

Retirees at NEOMED still enjoy staying engaged with one another and with faculty and staff on campus.

On Thursday, Aug. 24, the Retirees Association of NEOMED (RAN) held its annual dinner at New Era Restaurant in Akron. About 30 NEOMED retirees gathered to break bread and reminisce with one another, while learning about everything new at the university.

Julie Aultman, Ph.D., professor of family medicine, served as this year’s keynote speaker. She spoke about NEOMED’s commitment to the humanities in medicine and the importance of teaching the next generation of health care professionals.  Dr. Aultman discussed the values of exploring the social, historical and cultural dimensions of medicine – something that can be easily forgotten when health care providers solely focus on treating symptoms.  Dr. Aultman stressed the importance of understanding the entire narrative of each individual patient.

Dr. Aultman paid homage to the retirees noting, “You are our foundation, what we are doing is built upon your legacy, and that legacy continues to grow.” NEOMED retirees played a crucial role in the formative years at the university and the expansion and program growth is due, in part, to the many faculty and staff that helped establish the University in 1973.
