The MEDCAMP program is accepting applications from highly motivated students 18 years and older who have graduated high school by the time of MEDCAMP and be enrolled at a college or university entering their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of undergraduate education.
Applicants are currently being sought to fill 50 openings for this year’s program, which will be held at NEOMED July 11-13, 2019. Applications must be postmarked by April 3, 2019.
Now in its 29th year, MEDCAMP is designed to provide “hands-on” experiences in bio-medical science workshops involving research, clinical problem-solving and an introduction to the fields of clinical medicine. Participants join physicians, NEOMED medical students, faculty and researchers in performing applied activities, where they learn how a physician talks with a patient, how to study the clues to a patient’s illness, to solve medical cases by using critical thinking skills in addition to learning modern laboratory techniques. Participants also complete a case study on a fictitious patient.
All meals are provided. Participants are transported by bus to a Kent State University dormitory for overnight accommodations. Tuition for the three-day experience is $150. A limited number of tuition waivers are available for eligible participants.
Applicants must be 18 years old by the day of MEDCAMP, have graduated high school by the time of MEDCAMP and must be enrolled at a college or university entering their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of undergraduate education, and GPA of a "B" average or greater. Participants selected to participate in MEDCAMP must reside or go to school in Ashland, Ashtabula, Carroll, Columbiana, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Holmes, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas, Trumbull or Wayne Counties.
First consideration is given to applicants from groups underrepresented in health care professions. NEOMED values diversity in its educational, research, service and health care missions and is committed to improving and advancing diversity among its participants, faculty and staff. Selection of participants in MEDCAMP is conducted in a manner consistent with these values.
Information about MEDCAMP and applications may be found online or by calling 330.325.6580.
MEDCAMP is sponsored by Northeast Ohio Area Health Education Center (AHEC).
