NEOMED Celebrates Poetry

The 35th year of a national poetry contest that began and continues to thrive at NEOMED; the return to campus of a successful physician-poet alumnus: Everything points to a festive event on April 21, when the William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition holds its award ceremony on campus.

Amit Majmudar (‘03), a diagnostic nuclear radiologist who practices in Dublin, near Columbus, will reclaim his NEOMED beginnings by appearing as a guest speaker. Dr. Majmudar grew up in Cleveland and received a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences from the University of Akron.

Since December 2015, Dr. Majmudar has appeared at poetry readings across the state as Ohio’s first Poet Laureate.

The event will be hosted by Joseph Zarconi, M.D., and Delese Wear, Ph.D., faculty members for the four-year Human Values in Medicine curriculum at NEOMED. Three first-place winners from among the many entrants across the country will be announced at the event, along with honorable mentions. The ceremony is open to students, faculty and staff in the NEOMED community.

The William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition awards ceremony will be held at noon Friday, April 21 in Watanakunakorn Auditorium. Contact Ann Williams (no relation to the poet!), awwillia@neomed.edu,  with any questions.
