NEOMED is introducing a new program called NEOvations Bench to Bedside that will help students identify medical problems and work as interdisciplinary teams to develop innovative technological solutions to solve them.
The 7-month program brings students from NEOMED together with students from other institutions of higher education to form interdisciplinary teams representing the fields of health, business, engineering and law to complete the bench to bedside process. The process begins with observation of a clinical problem and identification of a specific need. From there, ideation follows with design of a medical technology while patent and regulatory requirements are also being considered. The final step is to create a prototype and develop a commercialization strategy.
"Part of NEOMED’s new strategic plan is to become a leader in innovation," explained President Langell. "The NEOvations Bench to Bedside program provides an outstanding platform to engage students into interdisciplinary teams and unleash the creativity of their diverse experiences and knowledge to solve some of the world’s biggest health care problems."
Throughout the process, students will receive support from medical, industry and academic professionals. Students will maintain ownership of their technology while gaining experience in accelerating new technologies from concept to commercialization.
The program will conclude in April 2021 with teams presenting their technologies to a panel of judges for a chance to advance their work for further development. Judges will be comprised of health and industry professionals, investors and University leadership.
There is no cost for students to participate in this program. For more information, contact Fayez Safadi, Ph.D., at fsafadi@neomed.edu or visit neomed.edu/benchtobedside.
