“Pandemic” Named Word of the Year

The reasoning is pretty clear: The word “pandemic” was on everyone’s mind starting in February 2020. Before the term COVID-19 had entered our collective vocabulary and prior to the rush on sanitizing supplies and toilet paper, people were looking up this word in record numbers. 

So, Merriam-Webster Dictionary chose pandemic as its 2020 Word of the Year
