Skype for Business Retirement - July 2021

Microsoft has announced the retirement of Skype for Business effective July 31, 2021. As of that date, Skype for Business will be inaccessible for NEOMED students, faculty, and staff. In lieu of this retirement, NEOMED will be fully transitioning from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams; further communications will be coming out soon regarding the transition. Note: Zoom will not be affected by the retirement of Skype for Business.

For those that have not yet used Microsoft Teams, Teams is a University-wide collaboration system that lives within NEOMED’s Microsoft 365 environment (formerly known as Office 365).  Broadly speaking, Teams provides a centralized means to chat/instant message, make audio/video calls, collaborate with others through file and screen sharing, and more.

For NEOMED students, faculty, and staff, Microsoft Teams is already part of your Microsoft 365 account. Microsoft Teams can be used via web browser, desktop application, and mobile app.

More in-depth information will be communicated soon; however, any meetings you have scheduled to use Skype for Business will automatically be converted to Microsoft Teams once the transition to Teams-only occurs. If you currently use the Skype for Business desktop application and do not have the Microsoft Teams application installed on your NEOMED-issued device, please contact the NEOMED Help Desk.
