Women in Medicine - External Scholarship Opportunity

The national organization, Women in Medicine (WIM), has announced three $5,000 Leadership Scholarships available for medical students this year.

Details provided by Dr. Kara Toles, WIM President: Through its annual retreats, WIM engages a national community of lesbian, sexual minority women and gender expansive physicians & medical students and families. WIM values cross‐specialty continuing medical education, family‐oriented community building activities, and professional mentorship.

The medical students who are the selected recipients of these scholarships, must attend the annual meeting, which this year will be virtual from May 14 – 16, 2021. Selected medical students will meet virtually with the attending physicians sponsoring the scholarships prior to the meeting, will give a plenary five‐minute talk on their leadership work and vision. Hopefully afterwards, they will continue their mentoring relationships with the physicians sponsoring the scholarships. There is an additional mentoring program during the meeting which includes meeting attending physicians in the specialty in which the student is interested.

There are two scholarships for LGBTQ leadership (e.g. curriculum development), and one scholarship for anti‐racism and social justice leadership for a LGBTQ medical student. About 15 – 20 medical students attend the national meeting annually from medical schools across the United States and Canada, often forming an important network that goes beyond the annual meeting in supporting each other, as they are often isolated as the only LGBTQ medical student in their class/school.
