NEOMED earns Gold Award for Excellence from AAMC

The report of NEOMED's successful strategic efforts to increase diversity among the student body has once again received national recognition.

Positive Change: PDEAC Impact Report 2022” has been recognized in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) Awards for Excellence competition. The report earned the Gold Award for Excellence in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives category.

According to AAMC, the Awards for Excellence program honors the exemplary work and contributions made in advancing medicine, research and education in academic medical centers.

From 2019 to 2022, the number of underrepresented minority students enrolled in the NEOMED College of Medicine increased from less than 6% to 25%. The PDEAC report shares the stories of how NEOMED achieved that success and others, along with goals for the future.

The judges were impressed with those outcomes as well as the quality of the presentation of the results. As one judge noted, “Extremely well-done report that combines great design, engaging stories, concise data, and strategic analysis of the goals NEOMED had when they started the program. Pair that with the demonstrated success of PDEAC to make a measurable impact on equity, diversity, and inclusion and you have a top-tier entry.”

Another judge enthused, “The terrific report underscores commitment, action, and results. The report humanizes broad topics through the use of personal narratives. This is a well-done and effective report.”

“Terrific program and commitment. You did a whole lot with little budget and staff time. Congratulations!” said another.

Reflecting the work of many, including the President's Diversity and Equity Advisory Council, as well as representatives from faculty, staff and students, the PDEAC report had previously received an award from District V of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

A special congratulations and thanks to PDEAC chair Daisy Alford-Smith and the President’s Diversity and Equity Advisory Council for their leadership, as well to senior graphic designer Scott J. Rutan for his graphic design and layout of the award-winning publication.
