Our Cultures, Our Community: Sandra Emerick

The flag display “Our Cultures, Our Community” represents the countries from which our students and their families come. It reminds us that including people from different cultures and experiences in decision-making will help to enrich community life at NEOMED.

Kudos to Sandra Emerick, Ed.D., senior executive director of Academic Affairs and Student Services, who spearheaded the flag project, which was sponsored by the Offices of Student Services and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Here is Dr. Emerick’s own reflection. How does the exhibit make you feel? Write to thepulse@neomed.edu.

Seeing the Italian flag every day at NEOMED reminds me of my wonderful parents, who grew up and were married in Italy before they came to the States to raise a family in Niles, Ohio. It reminds me of the Italian traditions, culture and customs they shared with me that I continue with my family today. For example, I love Christmas Eve dinners where we celebrate with the Feast of the Seven Fishes and observe the Roman Catholic custom of abstinence from meat and dairy.

As a first-generation American, I embrace my identity as an Italian-American and share my pride in my religion, holidays and celebrations, music, art and architecture.
