University Update recap

NEOMED President Dr. John Langell shared news from around the organization and took questions during a University Update on Oct. 28. Among the highlights:

  • Notice of $684,794 in grant funding was received since the September update.
  • Several NEOMED students recently received local and national recognition, including:
    • Andrew Fiorentino (M3), Jared Hinton (M3), Hunter Landwehr (M3) and Mark Villers (M2) presented a poster with Matthew Moorman, M.D., titled “The Medical Student Research Arms Race: Can They Win?” that was recognized among the Top 10 posters during the Sixth Annual Research and Innovation Day event at University Hospitals.
    • Jack Hu (M4) and Clare Rigney (M4) were honored by the Association of Indian Physicians of Northern Ohio. Hu was named Student of the Year and Rigney received the Global Health Award.
    • Nathan Ryan (M3) has been accepted into the Pathology Honor Society.
    • Maria Newlon (P2) received the 2024 CVS Health/AACP Community Pharmacy Health Equity Award.
    • Zack Martin (P4) received the Nexus Scholarship from the Ohio-Kentucky affiliate of the Association of Managed Care Pharmacists
    • Deanna Laughlin (P2) has been selected to serve as the regional project office for the Pan American Regional Office of the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation. She was also selected to serve as the member-at-large for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Student National Network Advisory Committee.
    • Sophie Tayade (M2) received the University’s Community Builder Award and Theresa Effa-Boateng (P3) received the Walgreens Pharmacy Inclusion Award and Scholarship during the NEOMED Multicultural Festival.
  • Benefits open enrollment is Nov. 4-12.
  • Several events are coming up, including Fall Fest, Grand Casino, Browns Watch Party, Leadership Day and VITALS with Patricia DePompei, Celebration of Military Service and Diwali Celebration
  • Langell and Provost Forrest Faison hosted town halls with students and faculty. Town halls with staff are planned in November.
  • The Quiet Study Area adjacent to the library will be renovated over winter break and into the new year.

Lacey Madison, vice president for strategy and transformation, shared the process for refreshing the University’s strategic plan. The NEOMED community will be asked to share their thoughts and ideas through surveys and focus groups and to join working groups when the refreshed plan launches in July 2025.
